How to Prepare for an Internship or Job
The transition from completing school to entering the workforce can be daunting, but some well-guided preparation can go a long way toward securing your career. Whether you're eyeing an internship or a full-time job, here’s how to get started on the path to success.
Self-Assessment, Research, and Resource-Gathering
Before diving into applications, assess your career goals and job readiness. Are you clear about what you want? Research the industry you're interested in and familiarize yourself with potential employers in the field. If you’re currently enrolled in college, consult with your academic advisor to identify some career tracks that might be a good fit, and visit your career center to get connected with job search resources. Otherwise, consider contacting a community career center or related nonprofit services program.
Professional Profile, Résumés, Cover Letters, and References
Seek out the academic and professional figures who know you best and ask if they’re willing to give you a job or internship reference. Make sure that your résumé and LinkedIn profile are updated with your most recent marketable experiences. It can be helpful to have your résumé handy for informational interviews, job fairs, and spontaneous job application opportunities.
Networking and Soft Skills
Join professional associations related to your field and consider leadership roles in on-campus or off-campus clubs. Soft skills like critical thinking, communication, and teamwork are highly valued by employers. Practice common interview questions and conduct mock interviews with a friend or mentor.
The Application Process
Apply for internships and jobs several months in advance of when you want to start yours and pay attention to application deadlines. Tailor your résumé and cover letter carefully for each employer and position. Organize and keep track of your applications. Consider brushing up on current business etiquette as well.
Interview Preparation
The interview is a pivotal moment in the hiring process, and you should take specific steps to prepare for it. Make sure to do your homework on the company and the person conducting the interview. Preparation demonstrates your self-discipline and shows the interviewer that you’re thorough in your work.
After the interview, be sure to send a thank-you note and maintain professional relationships. Regardless of whether or not you get a job offer, every person you meet can be part of your professional network, and they may one day pave the way for future opportunities.
