Tips for Non-Traditional College Success
Non-traditional college students now make up a significant portion of the college-going public. They face unique challenges, such as balancing school, work, and family lives. Yet they often have richer, more mature perspectives and capabilities than traditional students as well. If you’re a proud “non-trad” student, here are some strategies to help you do it all — and have a positive experience in the process.
How to Succeed in College as a Non-Traditional Student
Here are some tips for college success:
Embrace Flexibility
- Use class formats and times to your advantage. Enroll in online classes strategically to minimize logistical problems like commuting and schedule conflicts.
- Go slow and steady. Consider attending part-time to balance your work and family commitments.
Build a Support System
- Connect with your classmates. Engage with other non-traditional students to build camaraderie and mutual support. This will help you to avoid feeling isolated and enjoy more of a “normal” college experience.
- Utilize campus resources. Seek out resources that will help you stay on track, such as tutoring and academic counseling services, computer labs, on-site childcare, the financial aid office, and career centers.
- Communicate with your professors. Communicate early and often with your instructors about your unique needs and course progress. You’ll find many of them willing to offer flexibility and support where possible, as they’ll be inclined to reward proactiveness and good communication skills. Don’t wait until midterms or finals to initiate a conversation!
Manage Time Effectively
- Plan out your schedules. Create a schedule for each college term, starting with all the classes you’ve enrolled in. Then plan out each week, creating blocks of time around your class schedules for study and coursework, job and family commitments, and self-care.
- Set realistic goals. Many traditional students wait until the night before a course project is due and pull “all-nighters” to prepare, but this likely won’t be a sustainable habit for you. Break down assignments into manageable tasks and set achievable deadlines.
Lean Into Technology
- Embrace digital tools. Use apps and online platforms to manage your schedule and coursework. This is not only effective for success in college, but also builds valuable organization and project management skills that will make you a stronger candidate for new jobs and promotions.
- Take technology classes. Now’s the perfect time to learn not only the tech you need for doing your coursework, but that can open new doors for you in your career.
Foster a Positive Mindset
- Celebrate your uniqueness. Your life experiences and perspective are assets, not detriments; embrace them, and play to your strengths.
- Stay motivated. Keep your long-term goals in sight and remind yourself why you're pursuing higher education.
